Early Entrance to Kindergarten
A child will be admitted to kindergarten if he/she is at least 5 years old on September 1 of the school year in which the child seeks admission.

Requests for early admission will be considered under the following procedures:

  1. A child will be considered for early entrance if he/she turns 5 prior to October 16.
  2. The parent must make a written request to the school principal before May 1 of the preceding year.
  3. The principal will arrange for assessment of the child by the school psychologist. This assessment will focus on the child's developmental level.
  4. The principal and psychologist will meet with the parents and share the results. A decision will be made as to whether the child seems developmentally ready for early entrance.
  5. If the child seems developmentally ready for early entrance, the child will be referred to a licensed psychologist, outside of the school setting, for more complete testing. This testing will include intellectual, social, emotional, and developmental aspects. The cost of the test will be borne by the parent or guardian.
  6. The outside testing results will be sent to the school for a final decision.

The administrative capacity guidelines states, capacity will be deemed available at a K-4 elementary school for new applicants for open enrollment until class size averages are within one student of the top of the range.

Open Enrollment to Eden Prairie District 272
Open Enrollment is designed to enable any pupil to attend a school or program outside their district of residence. This choice program encourages parents and guardians to become knowledgeable about the needs and interests of their children and more informed about what educational programs schools are offering. Every family can benefit from examining the options available to them. Choosing the best educational experience for the learner is more important than choosing to cross district lines. Selecting a child's school is a significant decision.

Before Selecting a School or Program

    • Identify student's needs and interests and desirable educational experiences.
    • Contact school and district office for information on educational options they provide.
    • Visit school; ask questions of principals, teachers, parents, and students.
    • Remember, choosing to attend a school, is a significant choice.

    Application Procedure
Note: Filling out an open enrollment/non-resident agreement does not register your student for school. You must follow the registration process separately.

The student's parent or guardian must complete and submit an Application for Enrollment School District Enrollment Options Program developed by the Minnesota Department of Education.

    1. Application for nonresident attendance shall be on a form provided by the Minnesota Department of Education.
    2. Application for subsequent year's enrollment must be received prior to January 15 of the previous year to be considered for Open Enrollment.
    3. Applications received after January 15 will be considered for one-year “non-resident enrollment” status (see below).
    4. The District will notify the non-resident parent/guardian and the resident district if an application has been accepted or rejected within 30 days of receiving the application for current year enrollment.
    5. When applications are received for a subsequent year's enrollment, families will be notified by February 15 of the year preceding the enrollment year.
    6. The District will accept applicants in the order applications are received, with consideration given to administrative policy.

Applications are available from any school or district office. You may also download the forms here:

Note: Open Enrollment forms are not available at this time, please download the Non-resident agreement

    2008-2009 Nonresident Agreement
    2009-2010 Nonresident Agreement

One-Year Non-Resident StatusFamilies who miss the January 15 deadline for open enrollment may apply for a one-year non-resident status. To continue as a non-resident student in the following year, the student must be admitted through the regular open enrollment process following all guidelines of this administrative policy. Applications for one year non-resident status will be considered using the same criteria as set forth within the administrative policy with the following exceptions:

Families who move out of the district will be allowed to complete the current and one subsequent school year in their current school under a non-resident agreement, regardless of the capacity status of the school and grade level. For subsequent years' enrollment, the family must apply for, and be accepted, via the open enrollment guidelines as set forth in this administrative procedure.

Once your application has been received, it will go through the approval process. You will be notified via letter if your student has been accepted into the Eden Prairie School district. Once approved, please follow-up with registration for your student.
